Mandate/Objectives
- To use the Commons vision to maintain the agricultural aspect of the Commons by:
- maintaining and enhancing the land to produce food for generations to come;
- engaging in food production largely for the benefit of the community;
- modeling sustainable supported agriculture, using renewable energy practices; and
- engaging in horticultural research specific to Gabriola.
- To fulfill the ALC requirements outlined in Charting Our Agricultural Path.
- To coordinate the agricultural initiatives in the three-phase agricultural plan.
Accomplishments
The Farm Management Team was one of the first action teams on the Commons. They have developed:
- a community garden shared with People for a Healthy Community (PHC) as well as a children's garden;
- over 30 large allotment gardens available for community use;
- an experimental garden to furnish Commons events and conduct research; last year this was filled with 19 varieties of heritage potatoes;
- orchards containing plum, almond, hazelnut, fig, walnut, apple and pear trees;
- a blueberry plot containing 120 plants; and
- scything hay in the shallow soil of the grassland.
